Forest Department released a special booklet documenting the rich
butterfly diversity of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
Highlights:

Northeast India's richest butterfly habitats.
3. Bodoland forest landscape:
i.
Comprises
tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist mixed deciduous forests, and alluvial
grasslands.
ii.
Lies
at the confluence of the Indo-Malayan and Indo-Gangetic
biogeographic zones.
4. Butterfly Diversity:
Numerous rare, endemic, and threatened
butterfly species, making it one of the richest butterfly habitats in Northeast
India.
5. Unique Ecological Significance
The
only ecological corridor in Northeast India where butterfly species from
the Eastern Himalayas, Indo-Malayan region, and Indo-Gangetic plains occur
together.
6. Cultural Significance:
i.
Butterflies
inspire the Bagurumba, the traditional Butterfly Dance of the
Bodo community.
ii. The dance is believed to be inspired by colourful butterfly congregations observed during the monsoon.
