Current relevance:
Recently, the Indian Institute of
Tropical Meteorology (IITM) has signed an MoU with the Aryabhata Research
Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) to establish a long-term
climate monitoring station under the Bharat Climate Observation Network
(BCON) in the Himalayan region.
Key Highlights:
1.
IITM and ARIES signed an MoU, to strengthen
cooperation in climate and atmospheric sciences under the Mission Mausam
initiative of the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
2.
Aims: To advance
climate change research through sustained observations under the Bharat
Climate Observation Network (BCON).
3.
The agreement establishes a long-term partnership for
climate research and monitoring spanning over 50 years.
4.
BCON will monitor key climate variables
I.
meteorological parameters,
II.
greenhouse gases,
III.
short-lived climate pollutants,
IV.
atmospheric chemistry, and
V.
soil moisture
5.
The initiative seeks to generate a long-term,
high-quality, and high-precision climate dataset to support cutting-edge
climate research and evidence-based policymaking in India.
