News: Chinook copters join efforts to restore path to Amarnath

 

What is in the news?

       Recently, The Indian Air Force has pressed Chinook helicopters into service to help the Border Roads Organization (BRO) to restore the twin paths to the Amarnath cave shrine.

 

Chinook helicopters:

       It is a twin-engined, tandem rotor, heavy-lift helicopter.

       It is an American made helicopter system.

       Advantages of Chinook:

       High Capacity: The Chinooks can carry goods and cargo of up to 9.6tonnes each.

       Disaster Management: The helicopter can also offer support during disaster relief, medical evacuation, search and rescue missions, aircraft recovery and parachute drops.

       Currently, it is used by the Indian Air Force.

About:

       It was established for coordinating the speedy development of a network of roads in the North and the North Eastern border regions of the country.

 

Year of establishment: 1960

 

Nodal ministry: It was functioning under the Ministry of Defence.

 

Functions:

       It has diversified into a large spectrum of construction and development works comprising airfields, building projects, defense works and tunneling and has endeared itself to the people.
