Current relevance:

     Prime Minister to inaugurate foundation stone laying for India’s first commercial-scale coal-to-ammonium nitrate project in Odisha.


Highlights of the project:

  • It is India’s first commercial-scale coal-to-ammonium nitrate facility.
  • It is being developed by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL).
  • BCGCL is a joint venture between:
  • Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) 
  • Coal India Limited (CIL)
  • It will utilize indigenously developed coal gasification technology developed by BHEL.

Strategic importance:

  • Advance the adoption of cleaner and more efficient coal-based technologies.
  • Enhance value creation from India’s abundant domestic coal reserves.
  • It Serve as a model for future coal gasification projects
  • Boost the growth and resilience of the nation’s industrial sector.
  • It contribute to the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat by strengthening self-sufficiency in key industrial inputs and manufacturing sectors.


    Above project represents a landmark development in India’s coal gasification journey, combining energy security, industrial growth, import substitution, employment generation, and technological self-reliance.
