Current relevance:
Prime Minister to inaugurate foundation stone laying for India’s first commercial-scale coal-to-ammonium nitrate project in Odisha.
Highlights of the project:
- It is India’s first commercial-scale coal-to-ammonium nitrate facility.
- It is being developed by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL).
- BCGCL is a joint venture between:
- Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)
- Coal India Limited (CIL)
- It will utilize indigenously developed coal gasification technology developed by BHEL.
Strategic importance:
- Advance the adoption of cleaner and more efficient coal-based technologies.
- Enhance value creation from India’s abundant domestic coal reserves.
- It Serve as a model for future coal gasification projects
- Boost the growth and resilience of the nation’s industrial sector.

Above project represents a landmark development in India’s coal gasification journey, combining energy security, industrial growth, import substitution, employment generation, and technological self-reliance.
