News: What Mohenjodaro’s Dancing Girl figurine tells us about the prehistoric civilization

       The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Museum Expo 2023 in New Delhi.

       On the occasion, the PM unveiled the stylized and contemporized life-size version of a 5-feet tall toy in Channapatna style inspired by the Bronze Dancing Girl.

       The mascot, according to the PIB, “is interpreted as a modern-day “dwarpaal” or “door-guardian” that ushers the audience into the experience of the International Museum Expo 2023.”

 

Sculpture of Dancing Girl:

       The Dancing Girl is one of the highest achievements of the artists of Mohenjodaro, crafted more than 4,500 years ago, and stands as a rare and exceptional masterpiece.

       It belongs to the Indus Valley Civilization and dates back to circa 2500 BCE.

 

Made up of:

       The ‘Dancing Girl’ is a sculpture made of bronze.

       It is 10.5 cm in height, 5 cm in width and 2.5 cm in depth.

 

Technique:

       It is constructed through the intricate lost-wax casting technique which showcases the remarkable skill and craftsmanship of the people of that time in working with bronze materials.

 

Significance:

       The statue holds immense cultural significance as it reflects the artistic aesthetics associated with the female form during that particular historical era.
