DEEP FAKE - SCI & TECH

News: Dealing with deep fakes

What is in the news?

Recently, the faces of some protestors in the wrestling protest were deep faked.

What is a deep fake?

A deepfake is an artificial image or video (a series of images) generated by a special kind of machine learning called “deep” learning.

One of the most notorious applications of the technology is deep fakes, where synthetic media is used to swap the face or voice of one person for another.

Origin:

The term deep fake originated in 2017, when an anonymous Reddit user called himself “Deepfakes.”

In India there is no law or regulation to combat the issue of deep fakeness.

The Personal Data Protection Bill (2022), if passed, could provide some protection against the misuse of personal data, but it does not explicitly address deepfakes.
