‘key’ pacts related to Kudankulam nuclear power plant

In a major boost to their time tested
partnership, India and Russia signed some “very important” agreements related
to the construction of the future power generating units of the Kudankulam
nuclear power plant.
Kudankulam
Nuclear Power Plant:
●
The reactors use uranium as fuel and generate energy by turning nuclear fission heat
into steam, which drives turbines to generate power.
●
The Indian
government and NPCIL have maintained that the Kudankulam nuclear power
project is safe and that all required safeguards have been taken to ensure the
safety of nearby people.
●
Several safety features are in place at the plant, including a passive heat
removal system, an emergency core cooling system, and an emergency backup power
supply.
●
In addition, the NPCIL holds monthly
safety drills and has established an emergency response centre to respond to
any potential mishaps.
Status
of Nuclear Energy in India
●
Nuclear
energy is the fifth-largest source of electricity in India, contributing about
2% of the country’s total electricity generation.
●
India is also working on an entirely indigenous thorium-based nuclear plant,
“Bhavni,” which will be the first of its kind using Uranium-233.
●
The experimental thorium plant “Kamini” already exists in Kalpakkam.
