Leucine

Prelims:

Science & Technology, Biotechnology

Mains:

GS Paper II-Health, GS Paper III-Science & Technology

Current relevance:

Recent research has shown that the essential amino acid leucine not only supports muscle growth but also protects mitochondria, helping cells produce energy efficiently and potentially reducing the risk of metabolic and age-related diseases.

Highlights:

1.      Leucine:

                    i.            It is an essential amino acid that the human body cannot produce and must obtain through the diet.

ii.            It belongs to the Branched-Chain Amino Acid (BCAA) family, along with isoleucine and valine.

2.      Role of Leucine:

It supports muscle growth, tissue repair, protein synthesis,  and cellular energy production.

3.      Mitochondria:

The energy-producing organelles of cells that generate Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), the cell's primary energy source.

4.      Leucine's Contribution to Cellular Function:

It helps maintain the outer membrane of mitochondria, ensuring efficient ATP production and normal cellular function.

5.      Significance:

Healthy mitochondria improve energy production and may help reduce the risk of metabolic disorders, muscle degeneration, and age-related diseases.
