Current relevance
Recently, the Government of India
appointed Dr. Saibal Chattopadhyay (former Director, IIM
Calcutta) as the Chairperson of the National Statistical Commission (NSC),
along with Prof. Shubhabrata Das, Shri Satyendra Bahadur Singh, and Dr.
Madhavan Mukund as part-time Members.
About National
statistical commission (NSC)
1.
It was established in 2005 based on the
recommendations of the Rangarajan Commission.
2.
The apex advisory body for India's statistical
system and operates under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme
Implementation (MoSPI).
3.
The Commission comprises a part-time Chairperson and
four part-time Members possessing expertise and experience in the field of
statistics.
Major functions
1.
Formulates national standards, concepts,
definitions, classifications, and methodologies for the collection and
dissemination of official statistics.
2.
Recommends measures to improve public trust in official
statistics and ensure data reliability.
3.
Ensures effective coordination between Central
Government agencies and strengthens collaboration with State and Union
Territory administrations on statistical matters.
4. Conducts periodic audits to ensure high standards of data quality and integrity of statistical outputs.
