News: PM’s surprise visit to Ujjwala beneficiary

 

What's in the news?

       Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise visit to the Ayodhya residence of Meera Manjhi — the 100 millionth beneficiary of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and drank tea made by her.

 

PMUY:

       The Ujjwala scheme was implemented in May 2016 to provide LPG connection to women belonging to below poverty line families.

 

Aim:

       The PMUY scheme aims to provide affordable LPG connections to five crore families, particularly women below the poverty line (BPL), in rural India by 2019, promoting a smoke-free environment.

 

Nodal Ministry:

Objectives:

       The Ujjwala Gas Scheme aims to empower women.

       The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was established to provide nutritious cooking fuel.

       The Ujjwala Yojana prevents hazards and health issues among millions of rural people due to the use of fossil fuels.

 

Ujjwala 2.0:

       After the successful completion of Ujjwala Phase 1, provision for an additional One crore LPG connection under Ujjwala 2.0 was announced in the Union Budget 2021-22.

       It aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to those low-income families who could not be covered under the earlier phase of PMUY.
