Mains:

GS Paper III -Science and Technology, Infrastructure, Internal Security

Current relevance:

BSNL has launched the pilot version of its indigenous 5G service in Hyderabad, becoming the first Indian telecom operator to offer indigenous 5G radio technology with SIM-less authentication.

Characteristics of Q-5G FWA:

1.         SIM-less architecture:  BSNL's Direct-to-Device platform enables automatic authentication of the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), eliminating the need for a physical SIM card.

2.       Fully indigenous stack: Core, RAN, and CPE designed and integrated by Indian vendors under the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme.

3.       Gigabit-class speeds: Achieves up to 980 Mbps Download (DL) / 140 Mbps Upload (UL) with sub-10 ms latency—ideal for UHD streaming, cloud gaming and remote work.

4.       Rapid install: The self-install gateway provides coverage to nearly 85% of Hyderabad households using BSNL's existing tower network, without requiring fiber deployment or trenching.

Road-map after the pilot launch:

1.         Pilot expansion cities: Bengaluru, Pondicherry, Visakhapatnam, Pune, Gwalior and Chandigarh.

2.       Enterprise edge-cloud: The same 5G SA (standalone) core will support network-slicing and, SLA (Service legal agreement)-backed connectivity for MSMEs and smart-manufacturing clusters.
