Current relevance
India and Russia operationalised the
Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement (RELOS) in January 2026 to
facilitate mutual logistical support and enhance defence cooperation.
About Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement (RELOS) -
1.
It is a bilateral defence logistics agreement that enables
reciprocal access to military facilities and logistical support between partner
countries.
2.
The agreement provides logistical support, including fuel,
supplies, maintenance, transportation, and medical facilities, for military
operations and joint exercises.
Key Highlights of the Agreement -
1.
The logistics arrangement can be utilised only during
mutually agreed activities such as joint military exercises, training
programmes, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions,
and official port visits.
2.
The agreement facilitates reciprocal access to essential
logistics services such as accommodation, fuel, transportation,
medical support, maintenance, and repair facilities.
3.
The agreement strictly prohibits the permanent
deployment of troops, military assets, or the establishment of foreign
military bases within the territory of either country.
4.
The pact has a five-year validity period, with
provisions for periodic review and modification based on evolving geopolitical
circumstances.
