News: Vijay Diwas 2023: The triumphs and legacy of India's victory in 1971 war

       Vijay Diwas is commemorated on December 16 every year to honour the victory of the Indian armed forces over Pakistan in the 1971 war and to pay tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country.

       Following a 13-day battle, India secured a resounding triumph over Pakistan on December 16, 1971, leading to the creation of Bangladesh from the former East Pakistan.

 

Vijay Diwas:

       Vijay Diwas marks India’s victory against Pakistan in the 1971 war when 93000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered in Dhaka.

 

Significance of the Day:

1. Celebrate Bravery:

       Vijay Diwas celebrates the fearless whim and vigour of our armed forces. It is a testimony of India’s military power.

2. Remember Sacrifice:

       Vijay Diwas immortalizes the story of every single brave Indian Army person who sacrificed his life during the 1971 war against Pakistan.

       It also honours the soldiers who put their lives on the line for the nation and were severely wounded during the conflict.

3. Birth of a Nation:

       It was on this day that the new nation of Bangladesh was born.

       Following the signing of the instrument of surrender, East Pakistan ceased to exist. Hence, the day is also known as Bijoy Dibos in Bangladesh.

4. Change in Geopolitical Balance:

       The Bangladesh War victory furthered India’s role as the dominant power in South Asia. It shifted the balance of power towards India.

5. Morale Booster:

       The victory of Indian forces acted as a morale booster for the country’s establishment after the loss in the Sino-Indian War of 1962.

 

Vijay Diwas honours military personnel and civilians who sacrificed their life for India’s victory and also uphold the rights of human lives in East Pakistan during the war.
