Current relevance:

Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala will commence Export-Import (EXIM) cargo operations from August 2026.


Highlights:

About Vizhinjam International Seaport:

1.      Located on the Arabian Sea coast near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.

2.      It is the country's first dedicated deep-water trans-shipment container port.

3.      Developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd.

4.      Strategically located near the East–West International Shipping Route, a major global maritime trade corridor.

5.      It serves as an international trans-shipment hub, facilitating the transfer of containers between mother vessels and feeder ships.

EXIM Cargo:

1.      It refers to goods transported across international borders for export from or import into a country through maritime, air, rail, or land trade.

Significance:

1.      Enhances direct international shipping access for exporters and importers in southern India.

2.      Expected to reduce logistics and cargo transportation costs by nearly 50%, improving trade competitiveness.

3.      Strengthens India's self-reliance by reducing dependence on foreign trans-shipment hubs such as Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai.

Steps Ahead:

Accelerate multimodal connectivity, strengthen logistics infrastructure, establish supporting customs facilities, and expand port capacity to transform Vizhinjam into a globally competitive trans-shipment and EXIM hub.
