1. President Droupadi Murmu appointed
Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the 51st Chief Justice of India. Justice
Khanna, who is likely to take oath on November 11, will succeed CJI DY
Chandrachud who is due to retire on November 10."In exercise of the powers
conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the
President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the
Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 11 November
2024," the government notification said.
2. India's federal polity and the
country's taxation system experienced a déjà-vu of sorts when the Supreme Court
ruled in favour of states in a case on the taxation of "industrial
alcohol". The decision which enhances the ability of state
governments to tax what is a rich source of revenue, comes close on the heels
of a similar decision by the apex court in July.
3. Greenhouse Gas emissions of China and
India, two of the top three emitters, grew by 5.2 per cent and 6.1 per cent
respectively in the year 2023, a new UN report revealed. It said
the global emissions in 2023 were 1.3 per cent higher than the previous
year.

Organisation (ISRO) said its polar-orbiting satellite EOS-06 and geostationary
satellite IN- SAT-3DR had been tracking Cyclone Dana since October 20. "Cyclonic
storm Dana is fast approaching the coastal districts of Odisha and West
Bengal.
