       The Foreign Ministers of the L.69 group of nations held a meeting on the sidelines of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly to exchange views on reform of the United Nations Security Council.

       The leaders called the expansion of the UNSC “essential” to make the body “more representative, legitimate, and effective.”

       The L-69 Ministerial joint press statement read, “The Ministers reaffirmed that expansion of the Council, in both permanent and non-permanent categories of membership, is essential to make the body more representative, legitimate and effective.”

 

L.69 Group:

       The L.69 group is of pro-reform member states, including primarily developing countries from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific.

       The Group is bound by the firm conviction that expansion in both the permanent and non-permanent categories of membership of the UNSC is imperative to better reflect contemporary world realities.

       They form a major bloc that is united by the common cause of achieving the lasting and comprehensive reform of the United Nations Security Council.

       This grouping underlines the lack of progress in Security Council reform that has serious implications on global governance institutions & global peace and security

       The group currently has 42 countries as its members.

       India is also a member of the group.
