News: Cabinet approves “PM-eBus Sewa” for augmenting city bus operations

 

What's in the news?

       The Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved a bus scheme “PM-eBus Sewa” for augmenting city bus operation by 10,000 e-buses on PPP model. 

 

PM e-Bus Sewa scheme:

       The “PM-eBus Sewa” scheme aims to bolster urban bus operations by introducing 10,000 electric buses on a PPP model.

 

Financial Allocation:

       The Scheme would have an estimated cost of Rs.57,613 crore, out of which support of Rs.20,000 crore will be provided by the Central government.

 

Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

 

Duration:

       The scheme will support bus operations for a duration of 10 years.

 

Implementation Segments:

The Scheme has two segments:

  1. In 169 cities (selected through challenge mode for cities with a population of 3-40 lakhs), 10,000 e-buses will be deployed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
    1. For cities with less than 5 lakh population: 50 e-buses
    2. For cities with 20-40 lakh population: 150 e-buses
  2. In 181 cities, infrastructure will be upgraded to support green urban mobility initiatives. Behind-the-meter power infrastructure like substations will be created.

 

Operation Responsibility:

       States or cities will be responsible for running the e-bus services and making payments to the bus operators.

 

Significance:

       It seeks to enhance public transportation, promote e-mobility, and generate employment opportunities.
