News: After year’s delay, CSIR’s Bhatnagar awards for 2022 announced

 

What's in the news?

       After nearly a year’s delay, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has publicised the list of awardees for the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) awards for 2022, considered among the prestigious prizes for science in India.

 

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award:

       The award is named after the late Dr (Sir) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, the Founder-Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) India and is known as the ‘Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB)’ Award for Science and Technology.

 

Announced by:

       The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) announced the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (SSB) for 2022.

 

Significance:

       The SSB prize is awarded annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to recognize remarkable research contributions in the fields of biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and physics.

       It is considered the most coveted award in multidisciplinary science in India.

 

Eligibility:

       Any citizen of India engaged in research in any field of science and technology up to the age of 45 years is eligible for the prize.

       Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) working in India are also eligible.

       The prize is awarded on the basis of contributions made through work done in India only during the five years preceding the year of the prize.

 

Disciplines:

Divided into seven disciplines such as

       Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean, and Planetary Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Physical Sciences.

 

Prize Components:

       The SSB prize includes a citation, a plaque, and a cash award of ₹5 lakh.

       In addition to the cash award, recipients also receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 15,000 up to the age of 65 years.
