Recently, the Defence Research and
Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight test of the New Generation Akash Missile (AKASH-NG)
from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.

 

Akash
Missile System:

      
Akash is India’s first indigenously produced short-range (up to 25 km)
Surface-to-Air missile.

      
The missile system is among the key
platforms India exports to friendly foreign countries.

      
Akash has been developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development
Program (IGMDP).

 

Features:

      
Mid-range
surface-to-air anti-aircraft missile.

      
Supersonic
speeds
ranging from Mach 2.8 to 3.5.

      
Nuclear
capable.

      
It is a multi target, multi directional, all weather air-defence system
consisting of surveillance and tracking radars.

      
It has built-in electronic counter-counter measures (ECCM) features, which can help
the missile punch through enemy jamming and other methods of evasion.

      
Akash is powered by a Ramjet-rocket propulsion system.

The missile has the capability to engage
aerial threats up to the maximum range of 25 km and up to an altitude of 18 km
operating at a speed range of 1.8 to 2.5 Mach.
