Context

A major Ebola disease outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus is affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with cross-border spread into Uganda. The outbreak originated around Mongbwalu in Ituri Province, a conflict-affected and high-traffic mining region in north-eastern DRC. WHO declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in May 2026. World Health Organization
