Current relevance:
The All-India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, an autonomous premier institution under the Ministry of Ayush, has introduced the GARBHINI MITRA Course for the 2026–27 academic session.

About GARBHINI MITRA
Course:
1.
Institution: Offered by the All-India Institute
of Ayurveda (AIIA) at Sarita Vihar, New Delhi.
2.
Duration: A six-month offline training
programme.
3.
Capacity: Each batch admits 20 students.
4.
Eligibility: Candidates must have passed Senior
Secondary (10+2) from a recognised board and be at least 18 years old;
those awaiting Class 12 results can apply provisionally.
5.
The
programme seeks to develop trained personnel capable of supporting maternal
wellness at the community level.
Ayurvedic Foundation:
The course is
rooted in three traditional Ayurvedic concepts:
1.
Garbhini
Paricharya – Antenatal Care: An Ayurvedic approach to care during pregnancy, emphasising
suitable diet, lifestyle practices and mental well-being to promote the
health of both the mother and developing foetus.
2.
Sutika
Paricharya – Postnatal Care: Refers to Ayurvedic care after childbirth, aimed at supporting
the mother's recovery and well-being during the postnatal period.
3.
Garbhadhana
Vidhi – Pre-conceptional Care: Refers to Ayurvedic practices associated with preparing for
conception and pregnancy, encompassing care and guidance during the pre-conception
stage.
Training & Key
Components:
1.
Trimester-specific
dietetics and lifestyle modifications.
2.
Pregnancy-safe
yoga and maternal wellness practices.
3.
Emotional
support during labour.
4.
Newborn
massage and basic life-support protocols.
5.
Infection
control and sanitisation.
6.
Biomedical
waste management and workplace safety.
7.
Identification
of warning signs and facilitation of timely referral to qualified
doctors and healthcare facilities.
Significance:
1.
Maternal
Support: Creates
trained personnel to provide appropriate health education, lifestyle
guidance and community-level assistance during pregnancy and the postnatal
period.
2.
Ayurveda
Integration: Provides
structured skill development based on traditional Ayurvedic maternal-care
concepts.
3.
Employment
Opportunities:
Graduates can work as Garbhini Mitra Assistants, Prenatal/Postnatal Care
Assistants, Antenatal Wellness Guides and Maternal Health Support Workers.
4.
Wide
Application: Employment
opportunities may be available in Ayush centres, maternity clinics, NGOs,
community health projects and wellness institutions.
5.
Complementary
Role: GARBHINI MITRA
does not replace clinical antenatal care; routine check-ups, diagnostic
tests and monitoring of blood pressure and haemoglobin remain essential.
