News: Snow events of 4th Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg

 

What's in the news?

       Owing to a dry winter and a parched Gulmarg, the first chapter of the games featuring two ice sports events -- Ice Hockey and Ice Skating -- were held in Leh from February 2.

       The authorities reviewed preparations ahead of the events to be held at the popular ski resort in Baramulla from February 21 to 25.

 

Khelo India Winter Games:

       Part of Khelo India Mission under the Ministry of Youth & Sports Affairs.

       Recently, the 4th edition took place in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh.

 

Venue:

       Its first part will be held in Ladakh from 2-6 February.

       Its second part will be in Jammu and Kashmir from 21-25 February.

Headquarters – Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (New Delhi)

 

Objective:

       To give importance to all types of Olympic sports and produce a feeder channel of talented sportspersons who can shine for India at the highest levels of sporting excellence.

 

Honours:

       Sporting excellence, courage and character and a great sporting spectacle for Jammu and Kashmir.

 

Mascot of Game – Snow leopard – named ‘Sheen-e She or Shan’

 

Importance of the Mascot Selection:

       Symbol of the Himalayan Natural Heritage.

       Reflects the commitment of the government towards the protection and preservation of wildlife.

 

Logo of Winter Games:

       Prominent with the Indian tricolour, reflects the uniqueness of the picturesque land and the many sports that’s on the cards.

       Complete with a Dharmachakra (turning wheel of Dharma) on a hilltop in Chanspa in Leh, the venue of the Games.
