What's in the news?

Recently, MP Shashi Tharoor shared a video of a folk dance from Kerala that looked a lot like dandiya-garba.

The video shows a group of women dressed in Kasavu sarees and dancing with each other using sticks.

Kolkali Dance:

Kolkali is a folk art form performed in the Malabar region of Kerala.

The original Kolkali and Thekkan Koladi are its two styles.

In this, the artist moves in a circle by rotating small sticks, maintaining the rhythm with special steps.

It is a popular event at the Kalolasavam Art School in Kerala, which is considered to be the biggest cultural event in Asia.

It was recently performed at the Palakkad District School Art Festival.

Features:

The songs interwoven into Kolkali performance narrate devotional stories depicting regional deities, with the primary musical accompaniment emanating from the rhythmic sounds of the sticks.

The dance is enhanced by musical instruments such as Chenda, Elathalam, Mathalam, and Chengala.
