Current relevance:

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India participates in the First Consultative Meeting on Human Rights of SCO Member States in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

 

 

Highlights:

1.         Emphasized the role of NHRIs in fostering trust between the government and citizens and promoting social stability.

2.       Reiterated that regional cooperation must be based on:

(i)     Respect for State sovereignty

(ii)   Non-interference in internal affairs

(iii) Equality among member states

(iv) Mutual respect for national interests

Highlighted NHRC India's Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Capacity Building Programme for strengthening NHRIs.

(i)     Reaffirmed NHRC India's commitment to deeper human rights cooperation within the SCO framework.

(ii)   Expressed confidence that the consultative mechanism would become a permanent platform for dialogue, cooperation, exchange of best practices, and protection of human rights across SCO member states.

About National Human Rights Commission (NHRC):

1.         It is a statutory body established under the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA), 1993

2.       Functions:

(i)     Inquiry into human rights violations (suo motu or on petitions)

(ii)   Reviewing safeguards under the Constitution and laws

(iii) Promoting awareness of human rights
