Current relevance:
The Vice-President of India, launched India’s first non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed at Musunuru in Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh.

Key Features of the New
Hybrid:
1.
It
is described as India’s first non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn maize
hybrid seed.
2.
It
is an indigenously developed hybrid, representing domestic innovation in
seed technology.
3.
India
had previously depended on imported hybrid technology for high-quality
popcorn maize. The indigenous hybrid is expected to help reduce import
dependence and conserve foreign exchange.
4.
It
has the potential to produce popcorn maize capable of competing in global
markets.
Farmer–Enterprise
Partnership:
1.
Gourmet
Popcornica, an Andhra
Pradesh-based enterprise, works with over 17,500 farmers across eight States,
cultivating nearly 40,000 acres of popcorn maize.
2.
The
model links farmers with processing and market access, potentially
strengthening income opportunities for farming families.
3.
The
enterprise also operates facilities covering maize processing, quality
control, packaging, cold storage and storage.
Initiatives:
The programme also referred to
farmer-centric initiatives such as PM-KISAN, PM Fasal Bima Yojana, National
Food Security and Nutrition Mission and Namo Drone Didi, alongside Andhra
Pradesh initiatives including Rythu Bazaars, horticulture promotion and
natural farming.
Significance for Indian

Technological
self-reliance: Domestic
hybrid development can reduce dependence on imported agricultural technology.
