Current relevance:

The National Conference on Quantum Biotechnology brought together researchers, clinicians, industry leaders, startups and students to advance the application of quantum science in diagnostics, biomedical imaging, drug discovery and precision medicine.

Highlights:

1.       Quantum Biotechnology:

             i.            Quantum biotechnology lies at the intersection of quantum sensing, quantum imaging and quantum computing with life sciences.

           ii.            It uses quantum-grade measurement capabilities to investigate biological questions that conventional instruments may not be able to address.

         iii.            It represents an emerging interdisciplinary frontier connecting physics, biology, medicine and advanced technology.

         iv.            Its potential applications include diagnostics, biomedical imaging, drug discovery, precision medicine and biosensing.

National Conference on Quantum Biotechnology:

             i.            The one-day national conference was hosted by QMet Tech at the IIT Bombay campus, Mumbai.

           ii.            It brought together researchers, clinicians, industry representatives, startups and students on a common interdisciplinary platform.

         iii.            The conference aimed to help define national research directions in quantum biotechnology.

         iv.            It also focused on strengthening the pathway from laboratory demonstration to deployable healthcare technology.

          v.             The programme covered quantum applications in biology, the academic landscape, translation of quantum biosensors from laboratory to industry, and innovations in biosensing.

QMet Tech Foundation & National Quantum Mission:

             i.            QMet Tech Foundation is the Thematic Hub (T-Hub) for Quantum Sensing & Metrology established under the National Quantum Mission (NQM).

           ii.            It is located at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and is supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

         iii.            QMet Tech is developing high-precision quantum sensors and exploring their applications in biosensing and life sciences.

         iv.            Its role extends to supporting startups, talent development, manufacturing and testing capabilities required to translate emerging technologies towards clinical applications.

          v.             The conference reinforced the NQM objective of developing a collaborative and application-driven quantum ecosystem.

Applications in Healthcare & Life Sciences:

             i.            Diagnostics: Quantum sensing could contribute to highly precise measurement capabilities for detecting biological signals.

           ii.            Biomedical Imaging: Quantum-enabled imaging could extend the ability to investigate biological systems beyond the reach of conventional instrumentation.

         iii.            Drug Discovery: Integration of quantum technologies with life sciences opens new possibilities for research related to drug development.

         iv.            Precision Medicine: Quantum-enabled technologies can contribute to the development of more advanced and precise healthcare approaches.

          v.             Biosensing: High-precision quantum sensors can be directed towards biological and clinical questions that existing technologies may struggle to address.

             i.            Interdisciplinary Research: Brings together quantum physics, biotechnology, healthcare and industry to address complex biological challenges.

           ii.            Technology Translation: Emphasises moving innovations from laboratories to deployable healthcare technologies.

         iii.            Industry Participation: Growing industry interest can help transform research capabilities into practical and scalable applications.

         iv.            Startup Ecosystem: Support for startups can accelerate innovation and commercialisation in emerging quantum-biotechnology applications.

          v.             Domestic Capability: Development of talent, manufacturing and testing infrastructure can strengthen India's capabilities as technologies progress towards clinical use.

         vi.            Strategic Research Frontier: Positions quantum-enabled life sciences as a priority area within India's research and healthcare innovation agenda.
