AI has triggered an investment frenzy across global financial markets.


Massive Ai Investment

Goldman Sachs estimates AI hyperscalers will invest over $5 trillion by 2030 in

1.        AI Infrastructure: Develops computing systems and platforms required to build and deploy AI technologies.

2.      Data Centres: Provide large-scale storage and processing power to support AI applications.

3.      Semiconductor Ecosystem: Manufactures advanced chips that power AI devices and computing systems.

4.      Cloud Computing: Delivers scalable computing resources and AI services over the internet.


Growing Investor Concerns

Recent market corrections reflect fears over:

1.        Uncertain monetisation of AI investments: Investors are uncertain whether massive AI investments will generate adequate profits in the future.

         i.            Advantest: Benefited from rising global demand for semiconductor testing equipment used in AI chip manufacturing.

       ii.            Tokyo Electron: Witnessed strong investor interest due to its leading role in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

     iii.            Kioxia: Gained from increasing demand for memory chips essential for AI data processing and storage.

United States

The US continues to dominate AI investments through:

         i.            Anthropic initiating its IPO process: Anthropic has begun the process of raising capital through an Initial Public Offering (IPO).

       ii.            OpenAI preparing for an IPO: OpenAI is preparing to go public to attract large-scale investor funding.

     iii.            SpaceX's recent mega IPO, attracting enormous global capital: SpaceX's recent mega IPO has attracted significant global investor interest and capital.


India Has Missed the AI Rally

Unlike major economies, India has not attracted significant global investments linked to the AI boom.

1.        Persistent Foreign Capital Outflows: Continuous FPI withdrawals ($18.9 billion in 2025 and nearly $30 billion in 2026 so far) have reduced foreign investor participation in Indian markets.

2.      Weak Foreign Direct Investment (FDI): Declining net FDI inflows ($1 billion in 2024–25 and $7.7 billion in 2025–26) indicate weaker long-term investment in India's economy.


Pressure On the Rupee

1.        Capital outflows and high crude oil prices: Foreign capital outflows and expensive crude oil imports weakened the Indian rupee.

2.      Softening oil prices: The recent decline in global crude oil prices has reduced pressure on the rupee.

3.      Government measures: The government has introduced measures to attract capital inflows and stabilise the currency.

2.     Reduced Global Liquidity and Capital Flows

  1. Higher US interest rates reduce global liquidity by making capital more expensive.
  2. This may lead to lower investments in high-valued AI companies, increased capital outflows from emerging markets like India, and greater volatility in global stock markets.
  3. As a result, countries dependent on foreign capital may face pressure on their stock markets, currencies, and investment inflows.

Relevant Government Initiatives

1.        IndiaAI Mission (Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology - MeitY): A ₹10,371.92 crore mission to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem by democratizing compute access, developing indigenous AI models, supporting startups, and promoting responsible AI innovation.

2.      India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) (Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology - MeitY): Established as an independent division under the Digital India Corporation, ISM serves as the nodal agency to develop a globally competitive semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India.

3.      Semicon India Programme (Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology - MeitY): A ₹76,000 crore incentive programme launched to promote semiconductor fabrication, display manufacturing, chip packaging (ATMP/OSAT), and semiconductor design, strengthening India's electronics value chain.

4.      Digital India Programme (Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology - MeitY): Launched in 2015 to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy through digital infrastructure, governance, and citizen-centric digital services.
