Current relevance:

The South China Sea is in news after satellite imagery indicated that China completed the first phase of land reclamation at Antelope Reef in the disputed Paracel Islands, with construction including a helicopter pad and possible preparations for a runway.

Continent:

The South China Sea lies in Asia, between mainland Southeast Asia and the Philippines, and forms part of the western Pacific Ocean.

Countries Around the South
China Sea:

The principal countries and territories surrounding the South China Sea are China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia, with Taiwan situated to its northeast. Several maritime and island claims in the region overlap.

Major Islands:

1.        Paracel Islands — northern South China Sea; disputed principally between China and Vietnam, with Taiwan also asserting a claim.

2.      Spratly Islands — southern South China Sea; subject to overlapping claims.

3.      Scarborough Shoal — eastern/northeastern part of the South China Sea.

4.      Antelope Reef — part of the Paracel archipelago.

5.      Woody Island and Triton Island — important features of the Paracels.

Rivers:

Important rivers draining into the South China Sea include the Mekong River, Pearl River and Red River.

Significance:

1.         Major global trade route: The South China Sea is a critical world trade corridor linking major Asian economies with global markets.

2.      Critical energy corridor: In 2023, about 28 million barrels per day of petroleum and petroleum products, roughly 37% of global maritime shipments, passed through the South China Sea.

3.      Important LNG route: Around 6.7 trillion cubic feet of LNG, equivalent to about 34% of global LNG trade, transited the South China Sea in 2023.

4.      Hydrocarbon resources: The region contains significant oil and natural-gas reserves and also has substantial potential for further offshore hydrocarbon discoveries.

5.      Strategic maritime location: Extending from the Strait of Malacca in the southwest towards the Taiwan Strait in the northeast, it occupies a strategically important position connecting major Indo-Pacific maritime routes.
