South Sumatra, Indonesia
Map: world
Current relevance:
South
Sumatra Province is in
news due to extensive forest and land fires (Karhutla), including fires
around Ogan Ilir and the Palembang–Indralaya corridor. Indonesia has
intensified firefighting operations amid dry conditions and widespread smoke
and haze. Recent operations have included ground firefighting, water bombing
and weather-modification measures.
Continent:
Indonesia is located in Southeast Asia,
geographically between the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. South Sumatra
lies in the southern part of Sumatra Island.
Bordering Countries:
1.
Indonesia
shares land borders with three countries — Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and
Timor-Leste.
2.

Island itself has no international land border. Across surrounding seas, it lies
close to Malaysia and Singapore.
Important River System:
Musi
River is the most
important river to mark in South Sumatra, and identifies Palembang along
its navigable course.
Important Places in News:
1.
Ogan
Ilir: Regency in South
Sumatra Province and one of the areas experiencing significant forest and
land fires.
2.
Indralaya: Capital of Ogan Ilir and an important
settlement along the Palembang–Indralaya transport corridor.
3.
Palembang: Capital and largest urban centre of South
Sumatra Province, situated on the Musi River.
4.
Palem
Raya & Pulau Semambu:
Areas around Indralaya where authorities have recently undertaken wildfire
suppression operations.
Significance:
1.
Peatland
ecosystem: Parts of
South Sumatra contain peatlands, which can become highly fire-prone
under dry conditions. Official reports from Ogan Ilir specifically describe
firefighting on peat terrain.
2.
Transboundary
haze: Large fires in
Sumatra can generate smoke and haze with effects extending beyond Indonesia to
neighbouring parts of Southeast Asia; the current haze has also affected people
in Malaysia and Singapore.
3.
Musi
Basin: South Sumatra's
official development plan identifies the Musi Basin as extending across
numerous regencies, including Ogan Ilir, Ogan Komering Ilir, Banyuasin and
Muara Enim.
4.
Economic
importance: The
province contains important oil-palm, rubber and other commodity-producing
landscapes, while Palembang functions as a major economic and transport
centre.
5.
Climate
relevance: Wildfires
release substantial greenhouse gases and particulate pollution and can become
more difficult to control during prolonged dry conditions.
